Furniture Care Basis Quick and Easy Furniture Care Tips - Keep your furniture looking better than ever with these helpful tips:
Heat and Humidity
Keep furniture away from heat sources, such as radiators, registers or fireplaces. Even a sunny window can cause furniture to fade or dry out. Changes in humidity can also be tough on wood furniture.
Have plenty of coasters on hand and use them for hot and cold beverages. Be sure to put a saucer underneath vases and potted plants to prevent water rings on furniture. Wipe up any spills immediately.
Protect your dining table from heat damage with placemats, tablecloths and trivets. Attach or place felt or rubber pads on the bottoms of your vases and collectibles to prevent them from scratching your furniture surfaces.
When you choose upholstered pieces, consider color, fabric and use—especially if you have children or pets. Tougher fabric upholstery is probably a better idea than leather if you have cats and dogs.
Upholstered Furniture
Follow these time-tested tips for making your upholstered furniture last.
Twice weekly. Vacuum cushions, pillows and the furniture frame. Fluff and rotate pillows for even wear.
Weekly. Remove the cushions from your chairs and sofas and vacuum the crevices and corners (after collecting any change!).
Monthly. Take the cushions and pillows outside and beat them lightly with your hands to shake out any dust. Spot checks. Treat spots and stains on fabric as quickly as possible. First blot—don’t rub—any excess liquid in the soiled area with a clean, color-safe cloth or paper towel and remove any loose dirt.
Eliminate odors - If odors like those from smoke, pets and cooking are making your upholstered furniture seem less than its best, try lightly spraying each piece with Fabric Odor Eliminator that can be purchased readily at your local supermarket. It eliminates odors on soft surfaces and in the air without just masking and leaves your home with a fresh, inviting fragrance that lasts.
