Welcome to Decor8’s Guide to Hong Kong, a comprehensive, no-frills look on life in Kowloon, the headquarter’s of our furniture wonderland - Decor8 Mong Kok!

Hong Kong is a burgeoning ecosystem that thrives as a special place that is both autonomous yet highly dependent on trade and the outside world for sustenance. Nonetheless, Hong Kong is an incredible place to live and experience. Often coined as the gateway to China, Hong Kong is a stones throw away to Shenzhen via MTR or bus and itself can be fully explored within a day. Yet its density and diversity provide Hong Konger’s a plethora of eye candy and unforgettable experiences.

After chit chatting with our amazing customers, we find that a lot of new comers to Hong Kong find it hard to get all the right information - from electricians, contractors, designers, places to go see, live and do. So we’ve decided to share our experiences with new expats in Hong Kong through our "No Frills Guide". We will try to be as detailed as possible so this guide will also hopefully benefit expats and locals that have been here for ages. We hope this information will be useful to everyone and if you want us to help you with any information you are welcome to e-mail us and we’ll try to help! Please note that all of our recommendations and insights are from our own experiences with customers or we had first hand. None of our listings are sponsored or paid for what so ever. If you find that any of our recommendations aren’t amazing that is not the goal of this guide i.e. to provide you with the top ten or the best, but to offer a more thorough perspective on services and things to do in areas that are often overseen by traditional guidebooks, directories and articles. So we do hope you enjoy!

We will of course begin our journey by exploring areas closest to our headquarters in Mong Kok a.k.a. “The Dark Side” and we hope that after this we can provide a better perspective of things to do on the “Amazing Side” other than the traditional frills that visitors often associate Kowloon with! So stay tuned!

We decided to start with Kowloon because - this is where we are based and we love Kowloon. For newbies -> What is Kowloon? Wikipedia defines Kowloon as as “an urban area in Hong Kong comprising the Kowloon Peninsula and New Kowloon.” -> No Ming Bai - that's chinglish for I do not understand. People from Hong Kong Island describe Kowloon as “the dark side.” While everyone has their own description, neither of these are quite reassuring in terms of their ability to give anyone any information at all without having to click further into Wikipedia descriptions or automatically presume that Kowloon is “dark” therefore we should stay clear. In fact, Kowloon is extremely accessible to Hong Kong Island. It is one stop from Hong Kong via the Orange Line or the Red Line. Kowloon is almost home to the most exquisite properties that actually have a far better view than those on the Hong Kong Island side (sorry Hong Kong Islanders!), better prices and much more space. With all that separation aside, we’ll be focusing the next few posts on the amazing property developments on the Kowloon Side and why we’d totally recommend living on the Kowloon Side versus the Hong Kong Island Side.
